About Mediation

Mediation is a flexible and informal process where parties are brought together in the presence of a neutral person, who assists them to isolate disputed issues, develop options and explore alternatives, ultimately to reach a consensual settlement.
A study of mediation concepts, principles and goals reveals features that mirror closely traditional Asian philosophy and practices. We often compare the mediation process to the traditional "kampong style" approach of resolving problems through informal channels with the aid of respected third parties. The kampong ketua, the elder in village communities of old, performed a mediatorial role between squabbling neighbours. Such activities promoted strong community cohesion.
Neighbourhood and family units are the building blocks of our urban society. Neighbourhood and family squabbles, as well as other quarrels within the community, create stress, tension and disharmony. As its motto suggests, the work of the Community Mediation Centres seeks to 'Build Bridges to Reconciliation'.
