I graduated from an approved overseas university and I fulfil all the “qualified person” criteria apart from the requirement to obtain 6 months of “relevant legal practice or work” and/or “relevant legal training”
This section applies if you fulfil all the other “qualified person” criteria (including passing Part A of the Bar Examinations) apart from the requirement to obtain at least 6 months of “relevant legal practice or work” and/or “relevant legal training” within a continuous period of 8 months as defined in Rule 2 of the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules (please check the guide ‘Am I a Qualified Person?’).
If so, these are the other admission requirements that you are required to fulfil, and the order in which you must fulfil them:
(i) First, you will need to become a “qualified person” by obtaining at least 6 months of “relevant legal practice or work” and/or “relevant legal training” within a continuous period of 8 months as defined in Rule 2 of the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules;
(ii) After you have become a “qualified person”, you will need to complete the Part B course and pass Part B of the Bar Examinations, and keep the requisite dining terms (see Section 13 of the Legal Profession Act read together with Rules 3 and 4 of the Legal Profession (Admission) Rules 2011); and
(iii) After you have become a ”qualified person” and passed Part B of the Bar Examinations, you will need to serve the applicable practice training period. Individuals in this category can only commence the practice training period after they have sat for the written examinations for all examinable subjects in Part B of the Bar Examinations (see Rule 16(1) of the Legal Profession (Admission) Rules 2011).
Queries about “relevant legal training”, “relevant legal practice or work”, and the practice training period should be directed to the Singapore Institute of Legal Education.
