In light of the theme 'Early Education and Intervention', CMU was invited to deliver a talk on Peer Mediation as an important concept for students to help their peers to resolve their conflicts and find solutions to their disagreements without the interference of adults (teachers).

To recruit and train further volunteers to join the Community Mediation Centre (CMC)'s mediator panel, CMU conducted a two-day Basic Mediation Workshop over the weekend from 3rd to 4th May 08 for a group of 19 participants at Yio Chu Kang Community Club.

The Community Mediation Unit's annual Mediators' Appreciation Dinner held on 6 December 2007 was graced by Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs, Assoc Prof Ho Peng Kee as Guest of Honour, together with distinguished guests from the judiciary, CMC's partners and other government agencies.

For the months of November and December '07, the Community Mediation Unit (CMU)'s calendar was filled with briefings to Community Mediation Centre (CMC)'s local referral partners and briefings to foreign delegates interested to learn more about Singapore's community mediation framework and the services provided by CMCs.

Some of you may remember the 'kampong ketua', or the respected village elder, who performed a mediatorial role between squabbling neighbours back in the old days. It is in the light of this 'kampong spirit' that the Community Mediation Centre (CMC) participated in the Pasir Ris - Punggol GRC Kampong Family Day on 18 November 2007 to promote the importance of mediation to community cohesion.

The workshop introduced participants to the practice of community mediation in Singapore as well as provided them with the necessary training to equip them with basic mediation skills. In addition, there was also a briefing conducted by CMU Manager, Mr Casen Ng to apprise the HDB officers of the services provided by the Community Mediation Centres (CMC) as well as the types of disputes that are suitable for referral by HDB to the CMCs.

The second CEP was on equipping the participants with 'Building Skills'. The briefing provided participants with knowledge about alternative dispute resolution as well as insight to mediation as a useful life-skill.
